Billie P. Schmidt

GALVA - Billie P. Schmidt, formerly of Galva, passed away early Tuesday morning, August 8, 2017, at the Hillcrest Home in rural Geneseo at the age of 93. Born March 24, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois, the eldest daughter of Elric and Rose (Schneller) Polly, she graduated from Argo High School and attended Evangelical Hospital of Chicago Nursing School. She married Paul M. Schmidt, M.D., October 14, 1944. She, Dr. Schmidt, and their young son moved to Galva in 1948 when Dr. Schmidt joined the practice of Robert H. Stewart, M.D. As a nurse, Billie assisted her husband with the practice and remained with it for a number of years after it was sold to another physician until her retirement.

Billie was active in the Galva community. She was a long-time member of the Congregational Church, singing in the Sunday choir, and of Chapter BR of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.  She was a Boy Scout den mother and volunteered for many years with the Galva Tutoring Center, providing after school tutoring. She had many interests and hobbies.  A particular favorite was creating miniature settings, crafting tiny furniture, wall decor, and rugs.  In addition to making her miniatures, Billie was a talented seamstress, quilt maker, gardener, and painter. Cooking was also one of her specialties. She was an avid reader, loved cats, and was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

Billie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a sister, Georganne Korkos. She is survived by her four children: Paul (Julie) Schmidt, Phyllis Dobey, Jim (Lisa) Schmidt, and Lorna Schmidt, and two grandchildren, Caleb and Jacob Dobey.  Also surviving are her sisters Patricia Jackson and Roberta Wesolowski. 

A Celebration of a Life well lived will be held for family and friends at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the P.E.O., Abilities Plus, Henry County Humane Society, Freedom House or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.
