GALVA - Catherine J. Larson, 98, a resident of the Hillcrest Home and formerly of Galva and Altona, died at 3:53 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 31 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altona. Rev. Tim Anderson will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Altona. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Galva Public Library, the Galva Ministerial Association, P.E.O. Sorority, Hillcrest Home Activities Fund, Abilities Plus or to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.

She was born June 1, 1918 in Dallas City, IL, the daughter of James and Elma Gene (Anderson) Crum. She married Hubert S. Larson on February 18, 1951 in Altona and he preceded her in death July 18, 2013. Survivors include her son, Jim (Deb) Larson of Altona, three grandchildren, Timothy P. Larson of Palo Alto, CA, Shawn A. Larson of Clark, MO and Matthew C. Farrell of Altona, two great grandchildren, Simon A. Larson of Clark, MO and Michael C. Farrell of Peoria, a brother, William (Eleanor) Crum of Ashville, NC, a sister, Virginia Lawhorn of Bettendorf, IA, a sister-in- Carole Crum of Dallas City, IL and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mary, four brothers, Andrew, Paul, Bob and John and three nephews.

Catherine attended Fairview Elementary School in rural Disco. She graduated as Salutatorian in 1936 from LaHarpe High School and as Salutatorian in 1940 from Knox College. She also attended the University of Minnesota. She taught school at LaHarpe, Mt. Zion and R.O.V.A. schools for 10 years until her marriage. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she had been the secretary and treasurer, a Sunday School teacher and a part of the Mary Martha Group. She had also been a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1941 and the Knox County Home Extension.
