Dale S. "Smitty" Smith

December 29, 1928 ~ September 24, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old

GALVA- Dale S. “Smitty” Smith, 88, of Galva, died at 2:40 a.m., Sunday, September 24, 2017 at the Toulon Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, September 29 at the funeral home.  Inurnment will be at Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to The First United Methodist Church in Galva or the Toulon Health Care Center.

He was born December 29, 1928 in Kewanee, the son of Francis and Lillian (Goff) Smith.  He married Lois Erickson on July 4, 1947. The couple celebrated their 70th   year anniversary by participating in the Galva 4th of July parade with their family. He is survived by his wife Lois, four sons, Jerry (Donna) Smith and William “Bill” (Tammy) Smith, both of Galva, John (Therese) Smith of Manteno, IL and Bruce Smith (Carol Kitterman) of Galva, four daughters, Jean (John) Huff of Galesburg, Loretta (Mike) Lamb of Gays, IL, Barbara (Ronald) Franklin of LaSalle, IL and Mary Jane “Chick” Johnson (Fred Carlson)  of Sheffield, IL, 16 grandchildren, 23  great-grandchildren,  three sisters, Beverly (Curt) Myers of Auburn, CA, Bonita “Bonnie” (Bruce) Montgomery of Weed, CA and Janet (Jim) Estep of Redwood City, CA., and a sister-in-law, Marsha Sanders of San Mateo, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean Sanders.

Smitty graduated from Galva High School in 1947. He had worked at Sears in Kewanee until 1983 when the store closed. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In earlier years, he coached Little League Baseball and was an avid bowler.  He enjoyed watching all sports and gardening. He liked to walk and would look forward to visiting and getting an occasional hug from those along the way. He will be deeply missed by his family.
