Gerald D. "Jerry" Young

GALVA - Gerald D. “Jerry” Young, 98, of Galva, died at 8:00 p.m., Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Toulon Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.    

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 8 at Galva Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. Pastor Trisha Chapman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00-10:45 a.m., Wednesday at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Galva or to the Galva Senior Citizens Center.

He was born December 15, 1918 in Industry, IL, the son of Edward and Anna (Standard) Young. He married Betty Nell Wheeler in 1940 and C. Enid Pobanz in 1958. He later married Virginia Todd on September 21, 1985 in Galva. Survivors include his wife of Galva, a step-daughter, Connie Wong of Galesburg, a grandson, Larry (Debbie) Golden, of Little Rock, AR, two great grandchildren, a great-great grandson, four step-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Joan Golden, two brothers, three sisters, a grandson, a step-son, John Todd and a step-great grandson.

Prior to serving his country in the Navy during WWII; Jerry worked on the construction of the Ordinance Plants in Burlington, IA, Grand Island, NE and Pierre, SD. He moved to Galva in January of 1946 where he was employed by Galva Creamery and Houghton Lumber Co. He retired in 1982 after serving 22 years as Executive Officer of the Galva Federal Savings & Loan Association. His memberships included; First United Methodist Church, Hagberg-Hamlin Post 45 American Legion, Galva Masonic Lodge #243, Galva IOOF Lodge #408 and the Galva Senior Citizens Center. He was a former member of the Galva Lions Club and the Galva Rotary Club and had served as a Galva City Alderman. He and his wife, Virginia enjoyed 30 winters in Mesa, AZ.
