Gertrude Eunice Aileen "Gert" Simmons

GALVA - Gertrude Eunice Aileen “Gert” Simmons, 95, of Galva, died at 7:49 AM Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 15 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Galva. Rev. Linda Winkelman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 14 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Inurnment will be at the Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church or the Galva Arts Council.

She was born August 20, 1920 in Galesburg, the daughter of John Anton and Hulda (Beckman) Carlson. She married Wilbur A. “Bill” Simmons on April 20, 1940 in Burlington, IA and he preceded her in death on January 19, 1966. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, two brothers and a great granddaughter, Anna Anderson.  She is survived by two sons, John (Linda) Simmons of Galva, Jim (Linda) Simmons of West Plains, MO, two daughters, Judy (Roger) Anderson of Galva and Jackie (John) White of Prairie Village, KS, eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great -great grandson.

Gert had graduated from Galesburg High School and later from Carl Sandburg College with an LPN Degree. She had worked as a LPN at Kewanee Public Hospital and for Dr. Eckberg. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, PEO, and Galva Arts Council. In her early years, she enjoyed swimming at Lake Calhoun, golfing and dancing. She was a well known local artist and doing art work in various mediums.
