He married Mary Robson on December 29, 1959 in Kewanee, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife who passed away on July 30, 2016. Jack graduated from Galva High School in 1951 and attended his 65th class reunion in August. He enrolled at Bradley University but left college to serve in the U.S. Navy. He was a proud Seabee – a member of the United States Naval Construction Forces – stationed in Trinidad which he often referred to with fond memories and was able to visit again for a reunion. After leaving the military, Jack joined his father, Howard, as a plumbing contractor at Hathaway's Plumbing and Heating. Jack and Mary purchased Swanks Hardware in Galva in 1969 and have owned and operated it with help from their son as Hathaway's Plumbing, Heating and True Value Hardware for over 47 years. Jack's commitment to the Galva community was reflected in many ways. In 1978 he was a founding member of the Community State Bank of Galva. Jack and the late Warren Arter founded and built the Galva subdivision. Jack also served the community as plumbing inspector for many years.

Jack and Mary were Grand Marshals of the 2009 Galva 4th of July parade. Jack served with the Galva Fire Department for 41 years and was a member and past President (1998-99) of the Galva Rotary. He was inducted into the Galva Wildcats Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 as a friend to GHS sports for running the scoreboard at Galva High School home football games for 48 years. He was also a member of the Galva American Legion and the First Congregational Church of Galva. The Hathaway family would like to thank and acknowledge the quality nursing and care team at Galva Courtyard Estates as well as the caregivers for their love, care and support over the last few months.
