GALVA - Lydia M. Stairwalt Camp, 98, of Galva, died at 6:58 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2016 at her home.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 10 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 11 also at the funeral home in Galva. Rev. Martin Gutzmer will officiate. Burial will be at Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Susan B. Komen Cancer Center.

She was born December 16, 1917 in Lewiston, IL, the daughter of Homer and Artha Johnson. She married Frederick “Ted” Stairwalt on May 17, 1941 in Maplewood, MO and he passed away on January 20, 1982. She later married LaVern Camp on June 6, 1987 who passed away on June 23, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Raymond and Marion and three sisters, Ethel, Helen and Wilda. She is survived by a son, Michael & Janet Stairwalt of Galva, a daughter, Patricia Mellin of Warrenville, IL, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and a half brother, James Johnson.

Lydia graduated from Farmington High School. She started teaching in a one room schoolhouse in Glasford at the age of 16. She attended Western Illinois University earning her BS Degree and later her Master’s through Bradley University. The degrees she earned were stretched out over a 33 year period of time. She loved working with children striving to give them a better future. She taught in the Galva School’s for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the Galva Retired Teachers. and she enjoyed working among her roses while always looking out for cardinals.
