GALVA - Richard C. “Dunk” Lewin, 86, of Galva, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at Heritage Health Care in Chillicothe, IL with family at his side.  Born May 21, 1929, he was the 9th out of 11 children born to John and Mabel Lewin.  He was born and raised in Galva, IL and was a 1947 graduate of Galva High School.  He married Martha Cox on March 30, 1952 in Wyoming, IL celebrating 47 years of marriage prior to her death on March 4, 2000.  Together they raised 3 children: Rebecca (Greg) Powell of Towanda, IL; R. Brent (Susan) Lewin of Lake Forest, IL; and Ann (Craig) Patty of Chillicothe.  His three grandchildren, Lexi and Luke Patty and Isabella Lewin, were his pride and joy.  He enjoyed watching them grow up and following their sports and activities.   Also surviving are two sisters, Kathryn Hurd of East Peoria, IL and Jane Clucas, Kewanee, IL, sister-in-law Lucille Lewin of Galva, along with many special nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Harold Lewin, Leon Lewin, Doris Tarleton, Mary Binge, Lois Taylor, Isabel Milliken, and Verna and Donald Lewin who died in childhood. 

 Richard served his country in the Korean War from 1952-1954.  Upon returning home he worked as a carpenter before joining the Galva Post Office in 1961 until his retirement in October 1990. He was a member of the Hagberg-Hamlin American Legion Post of Galva, a 60 year member of “The Card Club”, a member of Lake Calhoun Golf Association for 50+ years, and a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Galva. 

“Dunk” loved sports. He was a kid at heart who enjoyed playing golf and walking around Galva to stay active.  He was an avid Cubs fan, Illini fan, and lifelong supporter of the Galva Wildcats. He filled his life with hard work, friendships, and a strong devotion and dedication to his family.   He loved his hometown and the people who lived there and will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, October 4 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Monday, October 5 at the First United Methodist Church in Galva with Pastor Ann Champion officiating.  Burial will be in Galva Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Galva or the Galva Athletic Boosters are appreciated.

The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Health Chillicothe for their care and compassion as well as all the wonderful staff and residents of Galva Courtyard Estates.
