Shirley (Atwell) Floming

GALVA - Shirley (Atwell) Floming, 87, of rural Galva, died at 8:40 a.m., Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Hillcrest Home in rural Geneseo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 8 at St. John Catholic Church in Galva. Celebrant will be Fr. John Burns. Visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 7 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Cambridge or to the kitchen restoration project at St. John Catholic Church in Galva.

She was born October 22, 1928 in Loraine Twp., IL, the daughter of J. Gilbert and Ruby E. (Newlon) Atwell. She married Fred “Bud” Floming on January 17, 1948 in Moline and he preceded her in death on October 16, 1985. Survivors include her children, Connie (Dan) Collier of Cambridge, Keven (Cheryl) Floming of Cordova and Kerry Floming of Kewanee, seven grandchildren, Michelle (Larry) Cheline of Galva, Ryan (Jill) Smith of Plainfield, IL, Heather (Mart) Frakes of Galesburg, Jennifer Floming of Kewanee, Jason (Amanda) Floming of Cordova, Kristy (Randy) Kirkpatrick of LeClaire, IA and Jessica Floming and her fiancé, Jamey Kitterman of Kewanee, eleven great grandchildren, Cameron, Cooper, Samantha, Lindsay, Noah, Giana, Isaac, Avery, Savannah, Jackson and Colten and several cousins. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Shirley graduated from Atkinson High School. She had worked for John Deere Plow Co. in Moline and for Super Valu and Standard Oil in Galva. She also worked at Dixline Corporation from 1985 until her retirement in 2004. She enjoyed her farm life, doing yard work and fishing while spending time at their lake house. She also enjoyed Big Band music and attending the concerts in the park and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
