KEWANEE – David C. Johnson, 86, of rural Kewanee, died at 4:00 a.m., Thursday, February 22, 2018 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 24 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. The Very Rev. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the service and private inurnment will be held at Edford Township Cemetery in rural Geneseo at a later date where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
He was born January 9, 1932 in Andover, IL, the son of C. Franklin and Martha (Poston) Johnson. He was reared and educated in the Henry County area. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Wisconsin. In later years he served with the Kewanee Veterans Council Honor Guard, Post #31. He was a semi-truck driver for McNeil’s Asphalt Company for 38 years, retiring in 1996.
David married Barbara P. Gillespie on July 21, 1957 and they were happily married for 53 years until her passing in 2010. Survivors include his five children, Lynn (Allan) Swan and Roxann Sholl, both of Kewanee, Ryker (Lynette) Johnson of Decatur, IL and Chad Johnson and Clayton Johnson, both of Kewanee, eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, his brother, Carl Johnson of Burton, MI, numerous nieces and nephews and his long-time four-legged companion, Pepper. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Benjamin and Fran Johnson, two sisters, Mary Workheiser and Emily Roman and a daughter and two sons.
He led a happy and fulfilling life caring for his family and friends. He enjoyed going to the casino, watching NASCAR and mowing his yard.
