Esther L. Sturm

GALVA - Esther L. Sturm, 89, of Galva, passed away at 4:38 p.m., Sunday, June 18, 2017 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 22, at Rux Funeral Home in Galva.  Rev. Karen Martin will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Esther Sturm Memorial Fund.

She was born November 17, 1927 in Kewanee, the daughter of Frank and Grace (Ouart) Kuster.  She married Erman Sturm on December 19, 1948 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Church in Kewanee.  He survives, as does a son, Roger (Juana) Sturm of Galva. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Esther graduated from Galva High School in 1944.  In 1948, she was an Illinois delegate to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago for food preservation which she had earned first place with. She was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical United Church in Christ and was an excellent cook and also enjoyed canning. She loved being outdoors and took great pride in being a farm wife and working alongside her husband, working tirelessly over the years with their livestock and farming operation. She especially enjoyed mowing. In earlier years, she was a member of the Henry County Rural Youth and had been a 4-H leader for ten years. Esther was also a member of the Henry County Home Extension where she served as secretary and treasurer for ten years. She and her husband were also members of the Flemish American Club in Kewanee.
