GALVA – John A. “Butch” Thompson, 71, of Galva, died at 10:11 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 2019 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 1 at St. John Catholic Church in Galva. Celebrant will be Fr. John Burns. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 31 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva with recitation of the rosary at 4:00 p.m. Cremation will be accorded following the services and private inurnment will be held at a later date at Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Galva Athletics Booster Club or to St. John Catholic Church
He was born February 16, 1948 in Kewanee, the son of John B. and Frances L. (Johnson) Thompson. Survivors include his sister, Diane (Jim) Fairman of Sturgeon Bay, WI, two nieces, Nicole Ann “Nicky” Fairman of Kewanee and Julie Therese (Greg) Medlen of Sturgeon Bay, WI, a great nephew, Kyle Medlen and his fiancé, Rachel, a great niece, Kelsey (A.J.) Whiting, two great-great nieces, Emersyn and Everleigh Whiting and a special Illini and Dallas Cowboy friend, Darcy Hepner of Kewanee. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Butch graduated from Galva High School in 1966 and from St. Ambrose University in 1970. He was an elementary school teacher at Hayes School in Davenport, IA and following his retirement was a substitute teacher for Galva and surrounding schools. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Galva where he taught Sunday School. He was a proud supporter of Galva sports and could often be found in the bleachers or on the sidelines cheering on the Wildcats and Cougars. He was an avid fighting Illini, Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Cubs fan.
