GALVA – Larry “Nick” DeWayne Nichols, 83, of Peoria, formerly of Galva, died peacefully at the home of his daughter with family by his side on Saturday, January 12, 2019.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 17 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva where military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16 at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the services. Memorials may be directed to the Larry Nichols Memorial Fund
He was born December 5, 1935 in Galva, the son of Clyde and Norene (Anderson) Nichols. He married Joyce Aden on June 29, 1958 in Galva. Survivors include his wife of Peoria, two sons, Tebbert A. Nichols (Jeff Metz) of Peoria and Nathaniel D. Nichols (Jessica) of Galva, his daughter, Tahnee Watson (Mick Gerard) of Galva, two brothers, Robert (Laura) Nichols of Galesburg and Jeff Nichols of Mankato, MN, two sisters, JoAnn Delacruz and Jeanette (Mark) Ship, both of Galesburg, grandchildren; Matthew Sopiars (Bilyana Boeva) of Belgrade, Belgium, Jacob (Sara) Sopiars of Stuttgart, Germany, Aleksandr (Katrina) Sopiars of Trenton, IL and Elyssa and Peyton Sopiars, both of Galva and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Jo Hulsey of Galesburg.
Larry graduated from Galva High School in 1953 and attended Brown’s Business College in Galesburg. He served his country in the U.S. Army serving time in Germany. He was the manager of the Galva CO-OP for 27 years and moved to Trenton, IL until his retirement. He later moved back to Galva to work as a grain merchandiser for Knobloch Grain and Rumbold & Kuhn. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams fan. Larry was involved in many athletics including; baseball, golf and bowling and loved wagering. He was very involved with his grandchildren and their athletics and attended as many of their games and meets as he could.
