GALVA – Lois A. Smith, 91, of Galva, died at 1:28 a.m., Monday, November 12, 2018 at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 17 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Rev. Tricia Chapman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, November 16 at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Galva or to the Sarcoma Foundation of America.
She was born August 6, 1927 in Galva, the daughter of Carl and Anna (Lindholm) Erickson. She married Dale S. “Smitty” Smith on July 4, 1947 and he preceded her in death on September 24, 2017. Survivors include four sons; Jerry (Donna) Smith and William “Bill” (Tammy) Smith, both of Galva, John (Therese) Smith of Pingree Grove, IL and Bruce Smith of Galva, four daughters; Jean (John) Huff of Galesburg, Loretta (Mike) Lamb of Gays, IL, Barbara (Ronald) Franklin of LaSalle, IL and Mary Jane “Chick” Johnson (Fred Carlson) of Sheffield, IL, 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Eleanor Ericson and a brother, Raymond.
Lois graduated from Galva High School in 1945. She worked at Dixline in Galva for 25 years retiring in 1991. In her early years she sang and took Swedish lessons to keep up with her family heritage. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galva and she was a great cook and enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading and doing oil paintings and jigsaw and crossword puzzles. She especially enjoyed visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was known as the “Queen” of catalog shopping and was known for her buttermilk brownies which were referred to as “Grandma Lois’s brownies.”
