GALVA – Margaret Elizabeth Peterson Appell, 98, of Galva, died peacefully at 5:50 a.m., Friday, April 7, 2017 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 15 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Galva. Rev. Linda Winkelman will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church, 317 SW 3rd Ave., Galva, IL 61434. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.

She was born March 18, 1919, the daughter of Christian Peterson and Hulda Amelia Swanson in Warren, PA. She married Quinten Krantz Appell on November 9, 1941 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Galva. She attended Augustana College and received her Registered Nurse’s degree from Moline Lutheran Nursing School. She lived her married life on a farm south of Galva and loved life in the country. In her later years, she described herself as “the luckiest old lady south of Galva.” She was preceded in death by her husband on October 26, 2003, son-in-law, Richard C. Skeen and sisters, Anna Anderson and Frances Decker. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Ann Appell Skeen and two sons, Paul Quinten (Jill) Appell and David Lee (Ann) Appell. She was also survived by her grandchildren, Gwendolyn (Scott) McMillin, Richard A. (Kimberly) Skeen, Michael (Julie) Skeen, Theodore A. (Anne) Skeen, Amber (Radu) Alexandru, Timothy Skeen, Michael (Melissa) Appell, Nicholas (Rochelle) Appell, Christian Appell, Katrina Appell, Margaret Appell, Kathryn (Geoff) Pierce and Suzanne (Dan) Kravitz and great grandchildren, Kaci McMillin, Clayton Skeen, Trevor Skeen, Tyler Skeen, Theodore L. Skeen, Elizabeth Alexandru, Erin Skeen, Jack Skeen, Allison Skeen, Fisher Appell, Cecilla Appell, Isabelle Appell, Abigail Appell, Georgia Pierce, Lila Pierce, Marley Kravitz, Pryor Kravitz and Peyton Kravitz.

Margaret had been an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church since her marriage. She loved to cook and was known for her special cinnamon rolls and Swedish holiday cookies. She enjoyed spending time with family, especially seeing the smiling faces of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
