KEWANEE – Sharon K. Shook passed away on July 5, 2018 at Betty’s Garden in Knoxville, IL.
She was born August 15, 1942 in Hannibal MO, the daughter of Dorothy H. (Smith) Shanks and Harold E. Shanks. At the age of 1 she moved to Galesburg. Sharon attended Galesburg schools where she was a cheerleader and a graduate of the class of 1960. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Western Illinois University in 1964 and was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority there. Sharon went on to obtain her master’s degree in guidance & counseling at Northern Illinois University. She married James L. Shook in 1964 and started teaching at Wethersfield High School that same year. After the birth of her two children, she worked part-time administering the preschool testing program for kindergarten and taught physical education at Visitation School and fitness classes at the YMCA. When Wethersfield reinstated their guidance program Sharon became the K-12 guidance counselor. During her years at Wethersfield she was involved in several extracurricular activities including; advisor to both the junior high and high school cheerleading squads, freshman class advisor, J.V. and varsity volleyball coach, Key Club advisor and Trackettes. Besides her family, Sharon enjoyed camping, traveling and sports, especially tennis and golf.
Sharon is survived by a daughter, Kelly Moon, a son Kevin Shook, five grandchildren; Clay Dilks, Ethan Shook, Rebecca Shook, Emily Shook and Reagan Shook and a sister, Harlene Baker. Her parents, Dorothy and Harold Shanks, a sister, Helen Richardson and her husband, James L. Shook preceded her in death.
Graveside services for James and Sharon will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 11 at Wethersfield Cemetery in Kewanee. Rev. Martin Gutzmer will officiate. Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.
