Tony Rashid

It is with great sadness that the family of Tony Rashid announces his sudden passing on Friday July 20, 2018 at approximately 11:20 a.m. in the Black Hills of South Dakota, found doing what he loved most - mountain climbing.

He will forever be remembered by his wife of 36 years, Lisa Rashid of Kewanee, son, Nathan Rashid of Kewanee, son and daughter-in-law, Jake & Eftihia Rashid of Chicago, daughter and son-in-law, Tawnie & Tyler Ewing of Sterling, daughter, Tori Rashid of Kewanee, and his best buddy, Brute. Tony was preceded in death by his father, James Rashid. He will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Alja Rashid, his 5 siblings: Brian (Kathy) Rashid of Bettendorf, Paul (Kate) Rashid of Neponset, Adeeba Rashid of Kewanee, DeEtte (Scott) Stauffer of Kewanee, and James (Kelli) Rashid of Kewanee, his extended family, and loved ones.

Tony was born in Iowa City, Iowa on November 27, 1959 to James and Alja (Isenhart) Rashid. He grew up and went to school in Toulon, IL, where he shared many fond memories with his brothers and buddies. Tony attended Wethersfield his senior year and that is where he met Lisa Gustafson, the love of his life. They married on September 18, 1982 at Zion Lutheran Church in Kewanee. Tony and his wife owned and operated businesses in Kewanee, Moline, Princeton, and Springfield, MO. He enjoyed the outdoors - especially the challenges and adventures of mountain climbing with his brothers, sons, and buddies. He also enjoyed hitting the open road on his motorcycle with brothers and buddies. He filmed a few amateur short films - one of them titled “Invasion of the Corn”. Tony had a nickname (or second name) for everyone he knew - and was in the process of publishing a book on the art of giving second names. He was a big fan of Ted Nugent and KISS and attended many concerts with brothers, sons, and buddies. He became interested in the American Indians when he, some guys, and his mother rode in a truck to the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota in 1995. It would become a passion - the Great Chiefs, the culture, and the tragedy. Lisa and Tony traveled there many times and went on the Crazy Horse Volksmarch. A highlight of his life was receiving an invitation to attend a sweat lodge ceremony at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He admired the Buffalo and what it represented to the Plains Indians. “There is nothing quite like watching eagles soar at eye level or below when on a mountain.” He and Lisa donate to the Crazy Horse Memorial Fund and Akta Lakota Indian School. But his number one passion in life was animal welfare, mainly man’s best friend - the family dog - and cats. Rescue a dog or cat at your local humane society - and give it a good home. Celebrate the simple moments in life with a can of brew with family and friends.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 27 at Saint John Paul II Parish in Kewanee. Celebrant will be Fr. Johndamaseni Zilimu. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee. Memorials in Tony’s honor can be made to the following: Saint John Paul II Parish, the Henry County Humane Society, and/or the Akta Lakota Indian School.
