KEWANEE – Andre Marie DeSmit, 70, of Kewanee, died at 10:37 a.m., Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo.
A public visitation with no family present will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 2 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. Private funeral services will be held at the funeral home with Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck officiating. A public graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 3 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kewanee. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The funeral home will maintain compliance with COVID regulations and requires that all guests wear a mask for the safety of all those attending.
She was born February 12, 1951 in Kewanee, the daughter of Bill and Marie (Nelson) Peyer. She married Philip C. DeSmit on June 12, 1971 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Survivors include her husband of Kewanee, her son, Joe DeSmit of Osceola, her daughter, Jenny (Chad) Hodges of Kewanee, a sister, Jamie Hall of Kewanee, her grandson, Andrew, two great grandchildren, Evie and Jameison and her beloved cat, Zoey. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, Mildred and Andrew Nelson and a sister, Ann Marie in infancy.
Andre graduated from Kewanee High School in 1969. She had worked as the scan coordinator at Eagle Foods in Kewanee and also had worked at the Hostess Bread Store and at Insurance Plus. She was of the catholic faith and enjoyed collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, gardening, cooking and baking and decorating for the holidays. Family and friends look forward to her Christmas cookies that she made year after year.
She was known as “Andy” by her customers and was considered the “boss” of her daughter’s insurance agency. She was an excellent, loving and caring mother and she played a major role in her grandsons’ life. She was admired for her strength, kindness and always gave everything a try and never gave up.
