LA FAYETTE - Carole J. Gibbs, 89, of La Fayette, died at 7:08 a.m., Friday, December 6, 2024 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
She was born August 9, 1935 on the family farm between Victoria and Williamsfield on the edge of Redbrush in Knox County, the daughter of William Lafayette and Gladys Pearl (Murphy) Murdock.
Carole attended Salem and Collinson country schools until the 8th grade when ROVA Oneida was consolidated and graduated from ROVA High School in 1953. She graduated from Galesburg Cottage Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 and had also attended the University of Las Vegas, Nevada and Bradley University.
She married Arnold R. Rossell on December 1, 1957 in Galesburg and he preceded her in death on September 27, 2000. She later married Gary Dean Gibbs on November 28, 2008 in La Fayette. Survivors include her husband of Victoria, her three sons; Michael William Rossell (Lynn Moffitt), Douglas Ray Rossell and Stephan Gerald Rossell (Robin Kitterman), seven grandchildren; Brett (Lexi), Jacob, Paige, Megan (Pat) Lodding, Molly (Cole) Gardner, Stephan Lee and William Cody, several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews and many dear friends across the country. She was also preceded in death her parents, her brothers, Billy and Jerry, her sisters-in-law, Ruth Rossell Moxley and Rosalie Carlson Flickinger and many friends and other family members.
Carole worked for many years as a registered nurse at different hospitals and clinics including Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg Clinic and facilities in Oklahoma City, Las Vegas and Nashville. She held state and national offices for Surgery and Anesthesia organizations throughout her career. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution having served as Vice Regent and Regent. She enjoyed knitting, basket weaving, wordscape and crossword puzzles and reading. She cherished her family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 10 at Westfall Cemetery in rural Victoria with Rev. Glenn Corbly officiating. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is assisting the family with arrangements.
