KEWANEE - Daniel E. Zalewski, 95, of Kewanee, passed away at 7:48 p.m., Friday, October 24, 2025 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
He was born on December 22, 1929 in Kewanee, the son of Walenty and Josephine Zalewski. He married Barbara J. Wilt on May 14, 1955 in Kewanee. Survivors include his wife of Kewanee, his son, Brent (Corrie) Zalewski of Springfield, his two grandchildren, Bryan (Jessy) Zalewski of Springfield and Heather Zalewski of Indianapolis, IN, two great grandchildren, Everly and Sawyer, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Chester and two sisters, Virginia and Stella.
Dan graduated from Kewanee High School in 1948 and served his country in U.S. Army serving in Panama. He worked as a machinist and supervisor for Kewanee Farm Equipment until his retirement. He was a member of the former St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and currently Saint John Paul II Parish in Kewanee. Dan was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed bowling, walking, gardening, woodworking, dancing, playing cards and the occasional glass of wine.
Dan was a patient, kind and caring person. He always had a smile, great sense of humor, encouraging words to share and made all of those around him feel important. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He taught by example. Dan was a wonderful Grandpa and doted on his grandchildren teasing them about the Disney characters Mickey “Moose” and Goofy, teaching them card games and always ready to get ice cream. As Bryan and Heather grew older, he showed them the meaning of a grandfather’s love, was quick to listen to their stories, go for walks, build swing sets, provide encouragement and celebrate with them. Dan loved his family to the fullest. Our family will miss Dan immensely.
A public memorial visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Friday, November 14 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. Services will follow at the funeral home with Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck officiating. Private inurnment will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to Visitation School.
