Obituary

KEWANEE - David W. Brokaw, 76, of Kewanee, died at 2:50 p.m., Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 27 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee with military rites accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Pastors John Reside and John Plunkett will officiate. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the services at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded following the services. Memorials may be directed to an educational fund for his grandchildren. Casual or Chicago Bear attire is requested for the services.

He was born June 3, 1945 in Princeton, IL, the son of Orville and Bessie (Reichart) Brokaw. He married Shirley Draminski on January 12, 1985. Survivors include his wife of Kewanee, a son, Mark Brokaw of Davenport, IA, three daughters, Jennifer (Nick) Winkler of Kenosha, WI, Candy Parente of Ladd, IL and Julie (Vann) Millman of Creve Coeur, IL, five brothers; John (Betty) Brokaw of Princeton and Jim (Gwen) Brokaw of Tiskilwa, Robert “Bob” (Kay) Brokaw of Kewanee, Charles “Chuck” (Judy) Brokaw of Sun City, AZ and Gary (Brenda) Brokaw of Princeton, two sisters, Susie Morris of Bowling Green, KY and Mary (Danial) Thompson of Princeton, a sister-in-law, Helen Brokaw of Walnut and three granddaughters, Jenna, Hannah and Macy. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard Brokaw and grandson, Charles.

David graduated from Tiskilwa High School in 1963 and Midstate College in 1965 majoring in sales. He was drafted into the Army on February 14, 1966. His basic training was in Ft. Polk, LA & Ft. Hood, Tx.  His company, the 261st Signal Co., shipped from San Diego, CA aboard the USNS Upshur for a month-long voyage to Vietnam. In Vietnam he was the Radio Team Chief for the 459th Signal Battalion.  They were situated between 2 divisions & provided communications for the two. He also was Radio Chief on various helicopter missions. David left Vietnam in January of 1968 for Ft. Lewis, WA for ETS and his discharge was February 3, 1968. He went on the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities in October of 2016.

He had worked as a salesman and plant manager for Ag View in Princeton and was based out of the Sheffield plant. He was also a retired fireman having served as Fire Chief and President in Sheffield. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Kewanee where he served as a deacon. He was also a past president of the Horseshoe Fishing Club and a member of the Sheffield American Legion and Lions Club. His favorite hobbies were fishing, gardening and watching everyone go by from his patio chair.
