GALVA – Donald K. England, 98, of Galva, died at 1:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 24, 2024 at Mercer Manor Rehabilitation in Aledo.
He was born on April 21, 1926 in Galesburg, the son of Keith A. and Miriam A. (Eck) England. He married LaWanda I. Dempsey on May 12, 1946 in Knoxville, IL and she preceded him in death on March 16, 2005. He later married Peggy Ann Shields in October of 2006. Survivors include his wife of Galva, his son, Michael E. England of Scottsdale, AZ, his two daughters, Karen S. (Jack) Hawkins of Bishop Hill and Maradell I. (Perry) Peters of Phoenix, AZ, six grandchildren, Sheriess (Tom) Croke, Lane (Jason) Redmon, Matthew England, Carlee Hawkins, Craig (Tammy) Hawkins and Curtis Hawkins and great grandchildren, Viola Croke and Barrett Redmon. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Eugene and David England.
Don graduated from Williamsfield High School in 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 during WWII in the ETO 2nd Division 23rd Infantry obtaining the rank of Sargent. He farmed in the area from 1947-78 and worked for the Henry County Highway Department from 1978-90 and later for the Illinois Crop Association from 1993 until his retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galva and its Married Folks Class. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, was a Past Grand and Past District Grand of the 40&8 and a member of the Galva American Legion Hagberg-Hamlin Post 45. He was a member of the Henry County Farm Bureau, a past Knox County Farm Bureau director and a trustee of the Weller Township.
Cremation will be accorded and private inurnment will be held at Galva Cemetery at a later date. Military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Galva or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.
