Dwain Jacobson Obituary

GALVA – Dwain E. “Jake” Jacobson, 92, of Kewanee, formerly of Galva, died at 9:11 p.m., Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Betty’s Garden Memory Care in Kewanee.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 20 at Galva Cemetery with Chaplain Jordan Knight officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter, 8430 W. Bryn Mawr, St. 800, Chicago, IL 60631. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.

He was born November 24, 1928 in Galva, the son of Carl E. and Minerva E. (Troline) Jacobson. He married the love of his life, Delabele “Del” Wheeler on February 14, 1949 in Toulon. Survivors include his wife of Kewanee, three children; Diane (Steve) Winslow of Toulon, Dan (Linda) Jacobson of Cambridge and Denise (Mike) Kellogg of Kiowa, OK, nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Wilkins.

At the age of 10, Dwain was injured in a farming accident resulting in the amputation of his left arm. From that time forward, he could do with one arm any task he chose to accomplish. He met each challenge with determination and excitement.

Dwain graduated from Galva High School in 1947. Shortly thereafter, he started farming in the LaFayette area. Later, Dwain and Del moved to the Toulon area, where they farmed, which included milking cows until 1986. Dwains next successful venture found him and Del in the longtime family business of baking. Jacobson’s Bakery in Galva was started by his parents in 1928, the year he was born. The bakery was known for Jacobson’s Rusks, Swedish toast, which was his mother’s secret recipe. Dwain and Del continued operating Jacobson’s Bakery until retirement on January 1, 2018.

He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Galva. Dwain and Del were inseparable. They loved and always enjoyed being with family.

His work ethic was unsurpassed and has and will continue to be passed on to each generation. We will keep his life’s story alive about the man that never realized he lived life with only one arm.
