KEWANEE- Eldon Jack Lester Sr., 82, of Kewanee, passed away at 9:26 p.m. Friday, January 31, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 5 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. Pastor Kevin Drane will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be established.
Jack was born June 29, 1937 in Rock Island, the son of Clarence Forrest and Ethel Blanche (Belt) Lester. He married Mary J. Hegwood on July 22, 1995 in Kewanee. She survives, as well as three sons, Jack Lester Jr. of Tennessee, Thomas (Nichole) Rusk of Mattoon, IL and Shawn (Stephanie) Rusk of Kewanee, four daughters, Debi Allen of Mississippi and Dawn Rusk, Paula Land and Sherrie Carley, all of Kewanee, thirteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Duane, a son, Ronald Lee Lester, two granddaughters, Cassandra and Caitlyn Rusk and a great grandson, Nicholas Chayer.
Jack graduated from Rock Island Senior High School in 1955. He had worked at Hyster and Compaction America in Kewanee. He had served in the US Navy from July 1, 1957 to June 16, 1978, which included 5 campaigns in Vietnam and retired as a Chief Machinist Mate. He had received several citations including the Navy Commendation Medal.
He was a life member of VFW Post #8078 and the American Legion Post #31. He had also belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association #242 of Davenport, IA. He was a dedicated Harley Davidson fan and loved to ride his Harley with his wife. He also enjoyed working in the yard, traveling across the country with his wife and camping at Allendale Conservation Club. He and his wife had wintered in Texas and had an extended Texas family. He enjoyed all of his family and especially following his granddaughter Cora in her cross-country events.
