Eugene “Gene” E. Wallace, 94, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025 in Davenport, Iowa.
Born on May 19, 1931, to Russell and Elizabeth (Walker) Wallace, Gene grew up in Toulon, Illinois. He attended Toulon High School, where he was a four-year varsity basketball player, before proudly serving in the United States Air Force from January 1951 to November 1953.
After returning from active duty, Gene began his career at Ratliff Brothers in Kewanee, Illinois, where he worked for 46 years. In June 1954, he married the love of his life, Wanda, and together they began farming in May 1960. Farming was not only his livelihood but also his life’s passion, and Gene took great pride in working the land—especially with his favorite John Deere equipment.
Gene was a strong, stoic gentleman whose life reflected his deep love of family, farming, and community. He enjoyed traveling, boating, NASCAR, and cheering for the Chicago Bears. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family—whether attending his grandsons’ sporting events, supporting his great-grandchildren’s activities, or simply enjoying food, laughter, and conversation. He found joy in dancing with his beloved wife, speaking German with his grandson, and embracing life to the fullest. Known for his incredible work ethic, Gene leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, devotion, and love.
He is survived by his son, Randy, and daughter-in-law, Gayle; three grandsons, Michael (Amanda), Mark (Melissa), and Blake (Kaleigh); and four great-grandchildren, Braden, Jameson, Aaron, and Sloane. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; his son, Gary; his parents; and his brothers, Harry, Eddie, Mervin, and Bob.
The family will hold a private graveside service with military rites accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. A celebration of Gene’s life will follow from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 18 at the family farm. In lieu of flowers please make a kind gesture in his name to others.
