Evaliena "Evie" Hier Obituary

GALVA - Evaliena E. “Evie” Hier, 87, of Galva, died at 9:42 p.m., Thursday, September 4, 2025 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg surrounded by family.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 9 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva with Pastor John Reside officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, September 8 at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Galva Public Library.

She was born on June 14, 1938, in Kewanee, the daughter of James and Leona (Sexsmith) Throgmorton. She married Richard D. “Dick” Hier on March 10, 1957 in Kewanee and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, James, a grandson, Brett and special companions, Don Lindquist and John Hudson.  She is survived by her children, Mark (Vanessa) Hier of Galva, Toni Phillips of Galva and Penny Mirocha of Foley, AL, six grandchildren, Nicole, Sarah (William), Jennifer (Michael), Amber (Stephanie), Melissa and Emily (Danny) and four great grandchildren, Baily, Cora, Henry and Bryson.

Evie graduated from Kewanee High School in 1956. She started working at Anderson’s Grain, Galva Co-op, and for a photography studio in Kewanee. She later worked as rural mail carrier for 25 years and as a dog courier for her son, Mark.  She was a member of the First Christian Church in Kewanee and the Galva Senior Citizen Center, serving as a board member. In earlier years, she was a girl scout leader, an avid bowler, to which she served as an officer in those leagues and had done upholstering, which eventually allowed her to teach at Black Hawk College.  She was a talented artist, having painted murals at the Galva Library and notably Noah’s Ark at the First Christian Church, her family tree at home and specialized paintings for others in the community. Her art talents allowed her to draw and design her home. She enjoyed doing genealogy, crocheting, reading, flower gardening, attending blue grass festivals, going on cruises and playing pitch and other card games. Her greatest joy was being a mom, grandma and great grandma and would always be the greatest fan of all her kids and grandchildren in their activities.  She will be greatly missed by many.
