Evelyn Mae Bates

GALVA – Evelyn Mae Bates, 97, of Galva, went home with her Lord and Savior at 10:04 a.m., Friday, December 10, 2021 at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee.

Evelyn was born December 17, 1923 in in Burns Township, Kewanee, IL, the daughter of Oscar and Nancy (Huffman) Warner. She grew up her whole life in the Galva area and graduated from Galva High School in 1941. She married Elwyn “Bud” Bates on September 15, 1945 in Kewanee and he preceded her in death on July 28, 2006 in Galesburg.

Surviving is a son, Roger (Vicki) Bates of Galva and three daughters; Diane (Steve) Adkison of Denver, CO, Susan (David) Mowers of Toulon and Rita (Glenn) Edwards of Dawson, IL, ten grandchildren; Justin Bates, Jordan Bates, Bailey Bates, Darcy (Greg) Dukes, Tyler Adkison, Rebecca (Andy) Nelson, Amanda Mowers, Elizabeth Mowers, Jacob Edwards and Kylie Edwards, six great grandchildren, Riley and Madison Bates, Abigail and Noah Nelson and Rowan and Juniper Dukes, a brother, Dwain (Elaine) Warner of Galva, a sister-in-law, Bonnie Warner and several special nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Timothy Edwards, three brothers; James (Darlene) Warner, Carl Warner and Marvin Warner and a sister, Marian in infancy.

Evelyn and her beloved husband, Bud, farmed for many years. She retired as bookkeeper from the Galva Co-op. She was a member of the Galva First United Methodist Church, Wesley Weds Sunday School Class, Flemish American Club, Henry County Farm Bureau and several card clubs. She taught Sunday School and served on many committees. She enjoyed reading, knitting, puzzles, playing cards and paint by number. Evelyn really enjoyed life, especially her family and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 15 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva with Pastors Rebecca Gearhart and Chet Travis officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 14 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Galva First United Methodist Church or to the Galva Park District.
