Gary Lumberry Obituary

It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of Gary Duane Lumberry, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully on November 21, 2025, at OSF St. Francis, at the age of 80. Born on January 10, 1945, in Elmore, Illinois, Gary was the cherished son of Harlan and Hellen (Smith) Lumberry, who, along with his beloved sons, Douglas and Billy Jo Lumberry, preceded him in death.

Gary's journey began in the small town of Elmore, where he was born. Gary attended the old Williamsfield School, eventually graduating from Williamsfield High School in 1963. His work ethic was exemplary; after high school, he dedicated over 30 years to Caterpillar as an inspector before entering retirement. Even in retirement, Gary stayed active, finding joy doing repairs at Lake Calhoun Country Club, a place that became a second home to him.

On August 16, 1980, Gary married Rogena Dennison at his parents' home in Elmore, solidifying a partnership that would endure for 45 years. Together, they raised a beautiful, blended family, welcoming boys Douglas and Billy jo Lumberry as well as daughters Laurie Lumberry, Lisa Bohannan, and Melisa Eagle into their lives with open arms, ensuring every child was treated as their own. The love and unity exemplified in their family was a testament to Gary’s selfless nature and dedication.

Gary was a pillar in the community, volunteering his time as a coach and supporter of local sports, always encouraging his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their pursuits. He had an unmatched enthusiasm for cheering on his family at games, and he was known for offering wise words of encouragement and support to young athletes. His passion for sports extended to his love for the Chicago Cubs, especially relishing their 2016 World Series victory, and he enjoyed watching NASCAR races as well. He always enjoyed dancing and would cut a rug whenever he had a chance. He loved visiting with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; he especially loved his morning talks with Jeremy on his way to work, which were mostly to make sure he was safe. Also, he enjoyed his call and long talks with his daughter Lauire. He would drop anything to talk and spend time with any of his family.

Those who knew Gary can attest to his incredible spirit. He was a man who "lived hard and loved harder," known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He made a lasting impact on everyone around him, and the stories shared by friends and family reflect the deep love and respect they had for him.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Rogena Lumberry; daughters Laurie Lumberry (Jefferson McCluskey), Lisa Bohannan, and Melisa Eagle; and a large and loving family including grandchildren Jason Lumberry (Brianna Lumberry), Tiffany Lumberry, Ashley Hall (Jerry Hall), Brittany Lumberry (Craig Milan), Jeremy Eagle (Molly Eagle), Courtney Crain (Colton Crain), Alexis McCluskey (Cody Smothers), Rachel Johner (Kyle Johner), and Mathew McCluskey (Alyssa Farrell). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Ashayla Lumberry (Javontae Waters), Brooklyn Shannon, Austin Shannon (Lilliana Warrington), Mark Franklin Jr., Tayah Milan, Macaiden Milan, Travon Ward Jr., Pheobe Smothers, Collins Lumberry, Kyndal Thomas, Aizaic Milan, Brant Eagle, Jackson Lumberry, Alanis Crain, Brooks Eagle, Atley Crain, Bruin Eagle, Rosalie Eagle, Maddox Crain, Athena Smothers, and Maverick McCluskey and a great grandchild on the way. He also cherished his great-great-grandchildren, Layana Shannon and Javontae Waters Jr. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Sharon Larner, several nieces, nephews, and three brothers-in-law.

A funeral service to honor Gary’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 25 at the Williamsfield United Methodist Church. The visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the services at the church. Cremation will be accorded following the service and private inurnment will be held at a later date at Glendale Cemetery in Elmore.
