LA FAYETTE – Herman R. Menken, 83, of La Fayette, died at 8:50 a.m., Thursday, December 5, 2024 at the OSF Richard L. Owens Home in Peoria.
He was born July 19, 1941 in Peoria, the son of Alt and Kathryn (Wagner) Menken. He married Barbara A. Schwabe on September 23, 1961 in Wyoming, IL. Survivors include his wife of La Fayette, his son, Paul (Terri) Menken of Hanahan, SC, his three daughters; Laura (Fred) Spiegel and Christina McCullough, both of Kewanee and Betsy (Mike) Wilson of Lisbon, IA, a brother, Henry Menken of Clark, MO and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, James McCullough.
Herman graduated from Dunlap High School in 1959. He farmed in the area and worked at J. Brody Meats for 24 years, retiring at the age of 61. He continued farming until 4 years ago. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Stark County Farm Bureau and enjoyed dancing square dances and raising Holstein cows.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 11 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva with Rev. Katie Gallagher officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 10 at the funeral home. The burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Abilities Plus or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
