GALVA – James L. Carney, 92, of Milan, formerly of Galva, died at 8:25 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the Avonlea Cottage of the Quad Cities in Milan.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 19 at Galva Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Galva Fusiliers. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is in charge of arrangements.
He was born December 20, 1930 in Chicago, the son of Stanley and Emma Carney. He married Mary Jane Van Etten and she preceded him in death on May 8, 2018. Survivors include his twin brother, Stan “Rich” Carney, his younger brother, Tom (Mary) Carney and nieces and nephews.
James was a telegrapher for the Nickel Plate Railroad. He later served his country during the Korean War as part of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. He graduated Illinois State Normal University (as it was known then) and was a junior high and high school math and physics teacher. He and his wife Jane also coached the Scholastic Bowl Team at Wethersfield School. He was devoted to his wife and enjoyed biking, trains, his cats and all things of nature.
