James Leo Tossell, 83, of Kewanee, died at 5:03 p.m., Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at his home from complications due to Parkinson’s Disease.
Jim was born on March 7, 1941 in Kewanee, the first of six children of James and Erma (Richards) Tossell.
He graduated from Kewanee High School in 1959 and immediately left for the Navy. A career that lasted 20 years. On October 11, 1970, he married Margie Clifford at the Victoria Methodist Church, Victoria, Illinois and together built their life of adventures. Together every day except for military deployments. Upon returning to Kewanee, Chief Tossell began another career as maintenance supervisor for Wethersfield School District. Retiring in 2000.
Jim loved the outdoors. Whether hunting elk in the Rockies, camping and fishing locally or just enjoying time with his dog on long walks. He was caring, compassionate and respectful of his country, environment and others. He was grateful for all he had and never wanted anything more. His nickname for his backyard was “Sanctuary”. A sign painted by the “Wall Dogs” hangs in the gazebo he built. He could fix anything and took pride in doing it right! One of his favorite sayings was “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Margie and his Labrador, Cooper. Brother, Dick Tossell of Kewanee, sisters; Connie (Joe) Mangan of Florida and Ginger (Dan Bates) Tossell and Nancy DeLathouwer, both of Kewanee and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce Tossell and brother-in-law Tim DeLathouwer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 16 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee with Rev. Mara Ahles-Iverson officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. The burial will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
