KEWANEE – John A. Lewis, 89, of Kewanee, died at 9:30 p.m., Monday, November 27, 2023 at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee.
He was born November 25, 1934 in Iola, IL, the son of Cyrus and Dorothy (Spinner) Lewis. He married Deloris J. Prather on May 11, 1957 in Corinth, MS and she preceded him in death on September 25, 2004. Survivors include his son, Michael (Kathryn) Lewis of Kewanee, three grandchildren; Angela (Patrick) Babcock of Neponset, Ryan (Rae-Lynn) VanWynsberg of Knoxville and Tyler (Taylor) VanWynsberg of Bloomington, seven great grandchildren; Cyrus, Lincoln and Emerson Babcock, Delaney McCartney and Elena, Isabella and Amilia VanWynsberg and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings: Helen Lewis, Robert Lewis, Jean Neff and Betty Dow.
John graduated from Louisville High School in 1952. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-56. He worked for GTE in Belvidere, IL, retiring in 1995. In his free time he enjoyed going to the casino.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, December 1 at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee with Rev. Mara Ahles-Iverson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council at the funeral home following the services. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
