KEWANEE- John T. Mock, 99, of Kewanee, died at 10:40 p.m., Friday, December 8, 2023, at Kewanee Care Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 15 at Saint John Paul II Parish in Kewanee. Celebrant will be Fr. Chris Haake. Visitation will be held from 10:00-10:45 a.m., Friday at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee with recitation of the rosary at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to Visitation School or to Abilities Plus.
John was born August 27, 1924, in Toulon to Jennie Mock and was raised by his grandmother Edna Jane Mock. He attended Toulon schools, graduating from high school in 1942. He married Mildred Engel on February 9, 1952, at Visitation Church in Kewanee. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2015. Survivors include four daughters: Teresa (Steven) Krause of Geneseo, Marie Mock of Peoria Heights, Kathleen (William) Schweikert of Golden, MO, and Paula Schaefer of Kewanee, nine grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and a sister, Alice Lasley of Grand Junction, CO. He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents, his wife Mildred, a sister, Mary Jane Swank and a brother John King.
John retired in 1983 after working 30 years for the Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Co. as an administrative assistant. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War attaining the rank of sergeant. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and achieved 3rd and 4th Degrees. He served as Past Grand Knight of Council #734 and Past Faithful Navigator of Assembly #217. He had been the Financial Secretary of Council #734. John was honored to be Knight of the Year and honoree of the Diocesan Knight of Knights. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #31 and life member of the VFW Post #8078 of Kewanee.
He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon for the Peoria Diocese on May 21, 1988, and had retired as an active Deacon from St. Mary’s Church in 2003 but had continued pastoral care activities until 2015 at the age of 90.
