Norma "Pat" Brown Obituary

Norma “Pat” Brown passed away on February 18, 2024 on a sunny Sunday morning at home exactly where she always wanted to be when she finally got to “go Home.” She lived a long, fulfilling life giving so much to the world along the way.  She was a strong independent woman who always wanted to do whatever she could to make this world a better place.

Norma Patricia Swanson was born on August 17, 1927 in Kewanee, IL to Frederick and Lora (Nyberg) Swanson. They preceded her in death. Her little sister, Nancy Jane also preceded her in death as well as a stepson, Don Brown. She graduated from Galva High School and earned an associate degree later in life. She married Merle Streitmatter in 1946. They had four children: Linda (Fred) DeCamp, Gary Streitmatter, Alan (Linda) Streitmatter, and Amy (Greg) Milroy, four grandchildren: Francine (Doug) McCartney, Scott DeCamp, Dave (Mackinsey) Milroy, and Kyle Milroy and four great-grandchildren; Erica DeCamp and Alexis DeCamp and Quinn and Lincoln Milroy. In 1987 she married the love of her life, Boyd Brown. She cherished their 4 short years together and it brings so much comfort to her family to know that they are together once again. From that marriage, surviving are two stepsons, Boyd (Ann) Brown and Ron Brown and step grandchildren; Oliver, Elliott, Amelia, Garrett, Becky and Laura.

Much of Pat’s life revolved around her son Gary, born with Downs Syndrome in 1951 at a time when there were virtually no services for special needs children. Pat and Merle along with 2 other couples with special needs children worked diligently to create what has evolved into Kewanee’s Abilities Plus, which today serves hundreds of special needs residents. She always viewed this as her most important gift to life. Gary passed away 3 months ago. One of Pat’s biggest hopes was to be there for Gary throughout his entire life but was content to live “just one day longer.” Not to diminish the love she had for the others in her family, but Gary’s death left a huge void in her life. These past months she was looking so forward to being reunited with her sweet boy.

She loved her family. Her home was always most important to Pat, but she also worked outside of the home at times. She did clerical work for Country Companies and she and Merle started a bus service to transport children to attend Pilot House (now Abilities Plus) before special education classes were available for them in the public school system. Pat eventually worked for Abilities Plus as Supervisor for the Respite Program.

Pat was an accomplished pianist and organist. She played organ for the United Methodist Church for close to 60 years. She loved to travel, especially to sunny places with beautiful beaches. She loved cooking and baking and loved to have people stop by. She was sad when “dropping in on friends and neighbors” became a thing of the past. Her door was always open and loved it when people felt free to walk right in.

A Celebration of Life for Pat will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 2 at the Toulon United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church. Following the services everyone is welcome to join the family in the church basement for food and fellowship.

Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Abilities Plus.
