KEWANEE- Robert F. Somers, 82, of Shabbona, formerly of Kewanee, died at 5:50 p.m., Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at Prairie Crossing Living & Rehab Center in Shabbona.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 10 at Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee with Deacon Martin VanMeltebeck officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Memorials may be directed to the Kewanee Animal Shelter or to Saint John Paul II Parish in Kewanee.
He was born on December 20, 1943 in Kewanee, the son of James and Josephine (Schneider) Somers. He married Marilyn Christensen and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2012. Survivors include his son, Chad Somers of Sheboygan, WI, his sister-in-law Maddie, of Coos Bay, OR and his grandchildren; Mackenzie, Trinity, Morgan, and Hayley. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his siblings; Susan Rhode and Michael Somers, and his son, Cory.
Robert grew up in Kewanee attending Visitation Grade School and graduating from Wethersfield High School. After graduation, he joined the Marines and had two stints in Vietnam. When he came home, he married Marilyn and they bought a home in Granville where they raised their two sons. Bob worked at LTV Steel until its closing. He was a very kind man and didn’t know a stranger. He loved talking to people and making them laugh. He came home for Hog Days for many years and always said Kewanee people are always smiling and friendly. He will be deeply missed.
