GALESBURG - Sally J. Nelson, 82, of Galesburg, formerly of Galva, passed away at 10:53 a.m., Sunday, October 26, 2025 in the emergency room at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.
She was born July 7, 1943 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galesburg, the daughter of Erwin A. “Rudy” and Alice (Hartman) Pople. She married Robert Finch on June 12, 1966 and he preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Harlan Nelson on July 16, 1988 and he preceded her in death on September 6, 2024. Survivors include her son, Mark (Mindy) Finch, grandchildren, Robert and his fiancé Madalyn Veenstra, Tony and Hailey, two sisters, Suzane Roberts and Caroline Hoben and several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Sally graduated from Alwood High School in 1961 and from Illinois State University in 1965. She retired from teaching in 2000 from the Knoxville School District following 34 years of service and dedication. She also taught at Monmouth College and Carl Sandburg College. Her memberships included the VASA Lodge in Bishop Hill, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association, Beta Sigma Phi, Galva Rotary Club and the Messiah Lutheran Church in Galva.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 30 at the Dahinda United Methodist Church with Rev. Zoila Marty officiating. The visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the church. Following the services a luncheon will be held at the church. A private burial will be held at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Galesburg. Memorials may be directed to the Messiah Lutheran Church or to the Dahinda United Methodist Church. Rux Funeral Home in Galva is assisting the family with arrangements.
