"Big E" Eric,
What a devastating loss this is. Words can't convey what a good friend and big brother you were to me. In the 35 or so years I've known you, I've got so many great memories to draw from. You were solely responsible for my love and collecting of knives. You were more knowledgeable of Navy ships than any sailor I ever met in my time served. I remember how excited you were to find out I joined and that I was going to be on a ship. I swear you gave me a new knife for every special occasion. Still have the Kershaw you gave me for 8th grade graduation! It never mattered how long it had been since we'd seen each other, we always got caught up quick over Bourbon, beers, occasionally tequila, and great conversation. I have very fond memories of the many heart-to-hearts we had. And of all the nights I crashed on your couch after a night of drinking and conversing into the wee hours.
Eric, you were a big man with an even bigger heart and your passing left a big hole in mine. I miss you terribly, man.
Save me a seat. When I see you again, I expect to hear you say, "pull up a thumb, lad." Until then, here's mud in your eye.
Your eternal friend,
Shayne

My heart is broken that I didn't know of Eric's passing until after his services. We've been buddies for a long time and I considered him a dear friend. The sun will just not shine quite as brightly without him in our world. But as Dek said, he will no longer be in pain. I look forward to meeting him on the other side. Rest in peace, my friend <3
